ABOUT THIS CEMETERY

About Oak Hill Cemetery

A historic 22-acre private cemetery in Georgetown, established in 1848 as a showcase of the rural cemetery movement, with winding paths and terraced grounds descending into the Rock Creek valley. Memor maps its steep, wooded slopes for visitors and researchers.

Its Gothic Revival chapel was designed by James Renwick, architect of the Smithsonian Castle. Oak Hill holds Secretary of State Dean Acheson, Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham, Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward Douglass White, and Lincoln's son Willie during his temporary interment.
