01Why headstones deteriorate
Headstones deteriorate through natural weathering processes: freeze-thaw cycles crack porous stone, acid rain dissolves calcium-based marble and limestone, biological growth (lichens, mosses) etches the surface, and wind-borne particles abrade inscriptions over decades. Marble headstones from the late 1800s and early 1900s are often the most damaged because marble is particularly susceptible to acid dissolution.
The inscriptions on these stones are primary genealogical records — names, dates, family relationships, military service, and epitaphs that may exist nowhere else. Reading and recording them before they become illegible is a form of historical preservation.
02Lighting techniques for faint inscriptions
The single most effective technique for reading a faded headstone is raking light — light that hits the stone at a low angle, casting shadows in the shallow depressions of the inscription. Visit at sunrise or sunset when natural light rakes across the stone horizontally, or bring a bright flashlight and hold it at a low angle to the stone's surface. The shadows make even shallow carved letters visible.
Photograph the stone with the raking light in place. A phone camera captures what your eye sees, and the photograph can be enlarged and examined later. Take photos from multiple angles — inscriptions that are invisible from one direction may be clearly readable from another.
03Foil rubbing and chalk methods
Aluminum foil rubbing is a safe, non-damaging technique for reading faint inscriptions. Place a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil over the inscription, gently press it into the carved letters with your fingers or a soft sponge, and then peel it back. The foil retains the impression, which can be read by holding it at an angle to the light or photographing it.
The chalk method — rubbing sidewalk chalk across the stone surface to fill the inscription — is more controversial. Some preservationists use it on stable stones, arguing the chalk washes away in the next rain. Others avoid it entirely because chalk residue can remain in pores and attract moisture. If you use chalk, use only plain white chalk (not colored), apply it gently, and photograph immediately. Never use shaving cream, flour, or any substance that leaves residue in the stone's pores.
04Digital enhancement of headstone photos
Photographs of faint headstones can be enhanced using basic image editing software. Increasing contrast and converting to grayscale often reveals inscriptions that are barely visible in the original color photograph. Apps like Snapseed and Lightroom Mobile have selective contrast tools that can bring out lettering without affecting the rest of the image.
For particularly difficult stones, take multiple photographs at different exposures (HDR) and different angles, then compare them. AI-based enhancement tools are improving rapidly and can sometimes reconstruct text from images where the human eye cannot read it.
05What NOT to do: techniques that damage headstones
Never use shaving cream on a headstone. The chemicals and oils in shaving cream penetrate the stone's pores and accelerate deterioration. Never use wire brushes, scouring pads, or any abrasive tool — they scratch the surface and remove what little inscription remains. Never use power washers, which can shatter weakened stone. Never use bleach or household cleaning chemicals. Never apply chalk or any substance to a stone that is already crumbling or sugaring (surface powdering).
The rule is simple: if a technique removes material from the stone or leaves residue in its pores, it causes permanent damage. Photograph, foil, and gentle cleaning with water and a soft natural-bristle brush are the only safe methods. When in doubt, do nothing and photograph what you can see.
06Recording what you read
Once you can read the inscription, record it immediately. Transcribe the full text exactly as carved, including abbreviations, spelling errors, and decorative elements. Note the stone type (marble, granite, sandstone, limestone), its condition, and its GPS coordinates.
